The greatest quality or skill that an employer can possess is the ability to be able to motivate employees. This holds true at normal times and also when the organization is going through some tough growing pains, it becomes all the more important.
One may think that wads of cash need to be doled out in order to bring the best out of your employees, that however is not the case. The first and foremost thing employees dread is a workplace and a job where the daily input is not recognized and appreciated. Job search websites carry a lot of information on this; it will help to research some.
Your efforts all go in vain, unnoticed and the fear of being replaced, in an instant looms large. Well this is not a place where you would want to stay for long. Think of it from a manager or employer’s perspective, would you like to foster such an environment in your workplace. If you want your employees to stick around, you need to be offering them something more substantive than money which in any case is available elsewhere.
The answer to this is to keep your employees motivated and that too on a daily basis. This in itself may seem to be a mean task, well it is not that difficult. The trick is to make them feel truly valued. Let them know without their contribution the department, the company and the boss, would frankly be worse off.
Couple of things you could do are:
- Dispel the ingrained idea, “that everyone is replaceable”, both employees and managers are inflicted with this malaise. Counter it by striking intentional conversation, where you end up making the employee feel valuable by highlighting a positive about the concerned employee and appreciating it.
- Make them feel important by external clients, sharing a commendation mail every now & then for a given employee.
- Balance grunt work with challenging assignments.
- Single out employees and reward them according to their accomplishments, and of course recognize them as individuals.
- Never criticize or correct as it is the biggest de-motivator, use indirect methods to let people know and learn from their mistakes.
Make them a regular practice and do not miss any opportunity to highlight this aspect wherever you get an opportunity, whenever you happen to list a job online, post a job online, for job listings, and ensure it carries a slice of work life in your organization.
