The Awful Downside of Job Hopping Syndrome

Given the ease of availability of job boards which facilitate instant access to open positions, the contention that changing jobs now is way too easier and turnover has become all the more acceptable these days. However this comes with a cost to the people taking up these jobs and also the companies hiring them.

The Price

the PriceYou may be astonished, however that both the employee as well as the employer have to bear the price in terms of turnover, under performance. disengagement, and stagnation as far as career growth is concerned. Back in the olden days changing jobs was not a superficial act, it took much more effort as compared to making the switch now.

Knee Jerk Reaction

The current trend is to avoid working through short term work related problems, the default action taken these days is to go ahead and find a new job. Now a few of these job hoppers turn back and say they don’t find the job change not to be such a rewarding prospect, it would have been better had they stuck to their old job.

Intrinsic Reasons

People usually leave jobs due to intrinsic or extrinsic reasons, the extrinsic reasons are more often than not short term in nature and tactical. The intrinsic reasons are invariably career related, to foster growth and have a long term outlook. Both the job seeker and the hiring manager have differing views. They perceive and evaluate the same information differently.

Overvalue Short Term Needs

The practice of applying en masse to a whole lot of ill defined jobs, lured and hired by the superficial promises that a Overvalue Short Term Needsnice sounding position from an appealing employer brand  offers to them. The problem is collectively referred to as job hopping syndrome. Here one tends to overvalue short term needs without paying in the desired attention to the damaging long term consequences.

Spur of The Moment

A simple question like why are you going for a new position would elicit different answers, the answers can be categorized into daily grind category or going nowhere category. Many a times people go ahead and leave the jobs on the spur of the moment to overcome temporary challenges, the daily grind can range from being made to work overtime without prior information, may be the work exigencies have suddenly cropped up hence the communication gap.

Final Words

An employee may have gone ahead and messed up a project, that would force his exit. Or it could be that the daily commute is too long. These may well be valid reasons to switch jobs but they should not be used as an excuse by way of offering an explanation as to why a particular job didn’t work out.  Well if the employee is leaving due to lack of career growth than one must move own, similarly if there is a culture mismatch, this too indicates it is time to move on but not without exploring all the possible options. The debilitating malady of job hopping can be cured by not taking long term decision based on short term information.
